Fort Stewart soldier, Staff Sgt. Rashad Valmont faces life in prison as a result of him murdering his superior because he was dehydrated and delirious from a crash diet. Apparently, the soldier was overweight by military standards and was forced to lose weight rather quickly.
Valmont’s attorney is using his hunger and dehydration as a defense for the soldier murdering Master Sgt. Pedro Mercado. It appears that Valmont’s aggression against Master Sgt. Mercado stemmed from Mercado rejecting Sgt. Valmont’s vacation request last summer. I’m not sure where Valmont was trying to go on vacation, but the rejection prompted him to shoot his superior six times.
During his current trial, a military psychiatrist testified that the soldier was delirious from dehydration among other things as a result of his fasting.
If only we could turn back the hands of time, I’m sure that soldier would have eaten and Master Sgt Mercado would have approved that vacation!
My prayers go out to the families!
